ほっし校長 鍵っ子のお留守番はとても退屈だった。
今日も、学校から帰るとすぐに居間のテレビをつけた。
海外版のSFドラマが流れていた。
非現実的なSF映像は、僕の好きなジャンルだったため、
見入ってしまった。
円盤形の宇宙船に乗車し、宇宙旅行をしていた人々が、予期せず不時着した惑星でのストーリーだったことを今でも鮮明に思い出していた。
不時着した惑星には、宇宙船の乗客よりもはるかに大きな生物が住み着いており、さまざまなトラブルを乗り越えて、惑星から脱出するという壮大なストーリーだった。
僕もどこか遠くの星に行きたい。
僕の心は大好きなSFの興味から外れ、単に一人になってみたいという不義理な発想からだった。
鍵っ子の僕は、ひとりぼっちで家にいると、良からぬ発想を膨らましてしまうことが常だった。
そして、次の日も良からぬとはわかっていても、不義理な思いを膨らませるのだった。

Being a latchkey kid meant that coming home was often incredibly boring.
Today, just as always, I switched on the living room television the moment I got back from school.
An international sci-fi drama was playing.
I’ve always been drawn to the surreal imagery of science fiction, so I found myself instantly absorbed.
Even now, I vividly remember the plot: passengers on a disc-shaped spacecraft are on an interstellar journey when they unexpectedly crash-land on a foreign planet. The planet is inhabited by creatures far larger than the humans themselves, and the story follows their epic struggle to overcome various dangers and escape that world.
I, too, wanted to travel to some distant star.
My mind began to drift away from the sci-fi that I loved, lured by the slightly disloyal fantasy of just being truly alone.
As a latchkey kid, being left by myself at home always seemed to make my imagination run wild with thoughts I probably shouldn’t have been having.
And yet, the very next day, I knew it was wrong, but I found myself indulging in those same disloyal thoughts once again.
