ほっし校長 冷たくなった僕の息子は、じっと見つめていた。
僕の呼び掛けにも、気付かないまま、じっと。
霊安室の天井を見つめていた。
目を瞑り、見つめていた。
僕はキャリーケースを引きずりながら、
霊安室に向かった。
荒れたアスファルトの路面が、僕を引き留めるように。
ガタガタ音は、僕が息子に近づくのを拒むかのように
より激しく暴れた。
白いガーゼ生地の布を剥ぎ取り、息子の眠る顔を目に入れた。
冷たくなった額に手を当てた。
親指で肌を撫で、もう片手であごに手を添わした。
伸びかけた髭が、今にも「触るな！」と、今にも
僕の手を払い退けそられそうな気がした。
しかし、少しだけ温まった息子の額は、
あっと合う間に冷たくなり、全く動かなかった。
僕は、息子の顔を見ながら、視線を霊安室の天井に向け、叫んだ。
「ここにいるんでしょ」
「パパが来たよ」
「ここにいるんでしょ」
「パパはここにいるよ」
「寂しかったね」
「ごめんね」
「来るの遅くなって、ごめんね」
僕は息子の存在を感じていた。
息子のなきがらの斜め上に、息子の存在を感じていた。
僕はたった一人。
息子に会いに来た。
それは、とっても遅い再会だった。
やっと会えた息子は、冬の凍てつく岩石のように冷たくなっていた。
真冬が目前、冬の11月2日の深夜23時のことだった。

My son had grown cold, staring fixedly into nothingness.
He didn’t notice me calling his name; he just stared.
He was staring up at the ceiling of the morgue.
With his eyes closed, he was staring.
I made my way to the morgue, dragging my suitcase behind me.
The rough asphalt seemed to pull at me, trying to hold me back.
The rattling sound of the wheels grew violent, as if it were refusing to let me get any closer to him.
I pulled back the white gauze sheet, revealing his sleeping face.
I placed my hand on his chilled forehead.
I stroked his skin with my thumb, and rested my other hand gently against his chin.
His stubble was starting to grow out—it felt as if, at any moment, he might snap at me to “don’t touch me!” and brush my hand away.
But my son’s forehead, which I had hoped might warm up, grew cold again in an instant. He remained perfectly still.
Gazing at his face, I looked up toward the ceiling of the morgue and cried out:
“I know you’re here.”
“Dad is here now.”
“You’re here, aren’t you?”
“Dad is right here.”
“You must have been so lonely.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I’m so sorry I was late getting here.”
I could feel his presence.
I felt him right there, hovering just above his lifeless body.
I was all alone.
I had come to see my son.
It was a reunion that had come far too late.
The son I finally got to see was as cold as a frozen winter rock.
It was late at night, 11:00 PM, on November 2nd—with the dead of winter just around the corner.
