持病持ちの私は、活発に運動ができるスポーツマンに憧れを抱いていた。
持病を理由にスポーツをすることにためらいがあったが、心の中では、あの日焼けした、ガッチリした体型に憧れをいだき続けていた。
新たな地の住まいは、市街地にほど近く、１キロ以内には、大きな駅もある便利な場所だった。
土地勘のない私は、会社の総務部の方にお願いして、だいたいの予算を伝え、手頃なアパートの契約を依頼していた。
引っ越し当日にその新築の新居を初めて訪れたが、その２階の部屋にはロフトが付いていて、一見で気にいった。
そして、そのアパートの近くには、広大な広さの公園があった。
私は、新たな地での生活の中で、寂しさを紛らわすためにその公園を頻繁に訪れ、散歩する習慣になっていた。
公園に訪れる人たちはきっと地元の方々なのだと思いながら過ごしていると、ある公園内の施設の入口に施設オープンの広告の掲載があった。
「〇〇スポーツジム今春オープン！」私は、心の中で即決していた。
そして、心の中はワクワクでいっぱいになり、もうすでにスポーツジムに通って、この公園を大きなスポーツバッグを抱えてさっそうと歩く自分の姿を描いていた。
私は、この年の春から、このスポーツジムに通うことになった。

I had a chronic condition, and I longed to be the kind of athletic, active person who played sports.
Because of my illness I hesitated to take part in sports, but inside I kept admiring that sun‑tanned, solid build.
My new home was conveniently located near the city, with a large station within a kilometer.
Not knowing the area, I asked the company’s general affairs department to help: I gave them a rough budget and asked them to arrange a reasonable apartment.
I saw the brand‑new place for the first time on moving day; the second‑floor unit had a loft and I liked it at once.
Nearby there was a very large park.
To stave off loneliness in my new life I began visiting the park often and developed a habit of walking there.
I assumed the people who came to the park were locals.
One day I noticed a poster at the entrance to one of the park’s facilities: “XX Sports Gym — Opening This Spring!” I decided on the spot.
I was filled with excitement and already pictured myself striding through the park with a large gym bag slung over my shoulder.
That spring I started going to that gym.
