One-legged king
Osteosarcoma Survivor’s Way of Life

Do you know a soccer player who is called “the king of one leg“?

Do you know a soccer player who is also called “King of one leg”, “Angel with broken wings”, and “Magical youth”?

This soccer player is active in the People’s Republic of China and is Mr. He Yiyi.

This person is the same osteosarcoma survivor as me.

At the age of 12, osteosarcoma developed
in the upper base of the left foot, resulting in amputation of the left foot.

I had osteosarcoma at the base of my right foot when I was 10 years old, so it was close to Mr. He Yiyi.

He Yiyi was recognized for his talent for soccer from an early age, was scouted by a French team, and was injured at the base of his left foot while preparing to travel to France.

I found out the onset of.

He Yiyi had surgery and had his left leg amputated.

As a soccer player, it is a fatal operation.

However, I couldn’t stop crying when I saw Mr. He Yiyi.

He Yiyi, who lost his left leg, wants to play a soccer match with crutches.

He prefers a cane to a prosthesis. Even if I lose my left foot, I am very impressed with how I play my favorite soccer.

However, he is not allowed to play in the amateur league, which seems to be due to playing on crutches, but he wants to play in the amateur league and continues to play soccer. increase.

🟨 He Yiyi’s words contain an important message for us.

I feel very love.

I’m thinking of making people happy by doing my best and showing my efforts to everyone around me, even though I should have lost my left leg and be in disappointment.

Although he couldn’t enter the French professional league, he was convinced that he was the best soccer player in the world to tell people all over the world “what is happiness” by playing soccer.

🟨How to live as an osteosarcoma survivor

Even now, decades after the onset of cancer, I still think about “why I got cancer.”

The reason here is not the cause of the onset of cancer, but the “purpose of life with cancer”.

It feels like my mission to understand that some message is contained in intractable diseases that develop at an early age.

In the case of Mr. He Yiyi mentioned above, he also suffered from osteosarcoma when he was a child.

Here is a message from Mr. He Yiyi.

🔷 Don’t just shut yourself up and cry.

🔷 Only you can save yourself.

🔷 You should be able to make other people smile.

🟨 I spell out my thoughts on these messages.

1️⃣ You should be positive about your life

Our feelings about illness tend to be negative.

It may be unavoidable from the standpoint of that person.

However, by changing my way of thinking a little, my feelings tend to be slightly positive.

If you keep it and move forward, your feelings, way of thinking, and state of mind will all go for the better.

As a result, when I settled down in good condition, when I look back on myself,

The first reason for those good results was “a slight change in my thinking.”

I was able to actually experience and realize this.

I understand that people’s feelings cannot be changed easily,

Besides, the reason for the big change in that feeling was just a momentary change.

2️⃣ Don’t just shut yourself up and cry.

I developed osteosarcoma at the base of my right foot, and my doctor told me that I had terminal cancer.

In addition, he was told a heavy decision to amputate his right leg as a way to save his life.

My age at that time was only 10 years old.

The first time I come out of the operating room and find out that my right leg is gone, I panic.

In anticipation of that, he decided to give advance notice in order to avoid panic.

But later and earlier, I’m still told.

I felt a big shock.

I want to start crying and scream, but even if I do that, things can’t get better.

After receiving the announcement, I remember crying violently in my heart for a while.

I endured the voice without it so that my parents wouldn’t know it.

It was the utmost effort I could do when I was only 10 years old.

After a while, I felt a little relaxed and became able to talk with people.

The positive feelings for living grew from conversations with the doctors and nurses in charge of the hospital where I was hospitalized.

★ When I put the words in my heart into letters, it looked like this

“Many adults are preparing for my surgery.”

“Somehow, I feel that my life may be saved.”

“I have no choice but to do my best”

“I will not cry anymore”

And a few days later, I had a fateful day

3️⃣ Only you can save yourself.

No matter how much you love a patient suffering from an illness, you cannot take the place of the illness.

No matter how kind and affectionate you may be, the patient’s illness will not be cured immediately.

It’s a very strict expression, but it’s actually true.

After all, your illness has developed in your own body, which is an unmistakable fact, and you must accept it and face the illness.

Regarding illness, I think, “I have no choice but to be prepared and hope for my illness as my responsibility.”

4️⃣ It would be better if you could make other people smile.

It’s great, but very difficult, to feel “selfish” when you have a life-threatening illness.

Moreover, there are very few people who can practice this, and I feel that they have a very transcendental love.

If you have negative feelings about your destiny and feel down, the people around you will comfort you, but they will also make you sad.

In order to make people smile, I think it is important to understand that even if you are sick, you should smile brightly.

And when people around me smile, I think we should believe that the smile will attract people with smiles, and as a result, we will have a bright future surrounded by smiles.
