ほっし校長 「ねぇ、なんで、ママは真珠の指輪をはめてるの？」
まさくんは幼い頃、よくママに聞いていました。
「真珠は、とても綺麗でしょ。丸くて、優しい色がとても素敵だからよ。」
「僕もママのことが大好き。とても綺麗で、優しくて、素敵だよ。」
「あらっ、まさくん、ママの言葉真似したでしょ（笑）」
そんな楽しい想い出が鮮明に甦ってきた。
でも僕は今、病院に入院していて、
とても寂しくて、悲しくて、
「ママ、苦しいよ。助けて。」
まさくんは、もう、治らない病気と向き合うしかありませんでした。
「僕は、もう助からない。」
「ママ、僕を助けて。」
まさくんは、毎日、病院のベッドの上で過ごしました。
まさくんには、病室の白い天井と白い壁、そして、白い床しか目に写りません。
真っ白いお部屋の世界は、まさくんにはとても冷たく感じました。
そんなとき、まさくんは、ママの真珠の指輪を思い出すのでした。
キラキラして綺麗。
「真珠の中の世界ってどんな感じだろう」
「真珠の世界に入ったら、どんな景色が見えるのだろう。」
まさくんは、真珠の世界を想像しているうちに眠ってしまいました。
まさくんは、夢の世界にいました。
「ママ、真珠の中、キラキラして綺麗だよ。」
柔らかい光と、ほんのり甘い香りがまさくんを優しく包んでくれました。
真珠の壁に近づくと、さらに綺麗な景色が見えてきました。
たくさんの花が咲いた、高原の野原や綺麗な貝殻の砂浜に、すみ渡った青い空、さわやかな風が吹き抜ける山頂。
まさくんが今まで見たこともない、とても素敵な景色がどんどん見えてきました。
まさくんはとても幸せな気持ちになりました。
すると、
「まさくん、まさくん、」
ママが呼ぶ声が聞こえてきました。
「ママ、どこ？」
すると、目が覚め、目の前には、ママと看護婦さんが
ベッドの横に立っていました。

“Hey, Mama, why do you wear a pearl ring?”
When he was little, Masakun asked his mother that often.
“Pearls are so beautiful. They’re round, with a gentle color — simply lovely.”
“I love you too, Mama. You’re so beautiful, kind, and wonderful.”
“Oh my, Masakun — you’re copying me, aren’t you? (laughs)”
Those happy memories came back to him vividly.
But now he was in the hospital, feeling very lonely and sad.
“Mama, it hurts. Help me.”
Masakun had no choice but to face a disease that wouldn’t get better.
“I’m not going to make it.”
“Mama, save me.”
He spent each day on the hospital bed. All he could see were the white ceiling, white walls, and white floor of the room. The all-white world felt cold to him.
At times like that, he would think of Mama’s pearl ring — sparkling and beautiful.
“I wonder what the world inside a pearl is like.”
“If I could enter the pearl world, what would I see?”
As he imagined that world, Masakun fell asleep.
He found himself in a dream.
“Mama, inside the pearl it’s sparkling and beautiful.”
A soft light and a faint, sweet scent wrapped around him gently.
As he drew closer to the pearl’s walls, even more wonderful scenes appeared: flower-strewn highland meadows, sandy beaches scattered with lovely shells, a clear blue sky, and mountain summits swept by a fresh breeze.
One breathtaking view after another — sights Masakun had never seen before — filled him with happiness.
Then he heard his mother calling, “Masakun, Masakun—”
“Mama, where are you?”
He woke up to find his mother and a nurse standing by the side of his bed.
